This is a puzzle cache in honour of Tom Brown (our uncle) who spent more than 50 years of his life helping more than three generations of young athletes in the former village of Mechanicsville.
He fought tirelessly for more than 40 years to get Tom Brown arena built which was eventually named after him. The Ottawa Mayor at that time said… “He was the kind of citizen who made the community what it is today.” The mayor went on to say, “It is the Tom Browns of this world who really give us our values. He was a very selfless man… he loved young people.”
Tom Brown was a veteran of both the First and Second World Wars. It was after he returned from the First World War that he founded the Larouch Park Minor Hockey Association and began devoting every free moment to the youth in the area. He spent all his time at the park and if he wasn’t there he was out putting the squeeze on local businessmen for donations to support minor sports.
I was surprised at how little information is available on a man who gave so much to his country and the community in which he lived. As a result, finding answers to some of these questions may be difficult but they are available through Google if you can figure out where to look.
